Finding Lost Files

It happens to everyone at one point or another. A file is deleted that you need or that you didn’t mean to throw out. Often the first reaction to this situation is panic. Panic isn’t the best reaction to this situation. Often you can restore deleted files if you know what steps to follow and what to do. Here are some helpful tips that can help you to restore your accidentally deleted files.

Step 1: Check the Recycle Bin
Before you start worrying about a lost file make sure that it is actually deleted. One of the first places that you should check is your recycle bin. Often the files that you have deleted will go here first before they are permanently deleted. Head over to the recycle bin and see if your missing file is still there. If it is all you have to do is move the file back to its proper location.

You should also consider doing a search of your computer’s hard drive for the file name. Often you may have just misplaced the file or saved it to a location that you can’t remember. Searching the hard drive can help you to find missing or misplaced files.

Step 2: Consider Data Recovery
If your files have been removed from the recycle bin, you may still be able to get them back. You will need to use a data recovery program for this step of the process. You see when you delete a file Windows simply marks it as deleted. They do not remove all traces of the file from your system.

Your computer will be able to retrieve these files until new information is saved over them. Since new files may be saved over your deleted file make sure that you don’t create any new files while you are working on retrieving missing ones.  Data recovery software can be effective, but it is important to use it as quickly as possible. Once you realize that you have inadvertently deleted an important file make sure that you run a data recovery program as quickly as possible.

Choosing a data recovery software program is important. Choose a program that is known for being able to restore files. You can buy these programs from a local store or can download them online. If you do choose to download a file be very careful since if you don’t choose a reputable company you may end up infecting your computer with a virus rather than correcting the problem.  If you lose a key file, don’t worry. You may be able to find it saved in another location on your computer or in the recycle bin. If this doesn’t work data recovery is a great option.
